  16. A skilled biomedical researcher who served on the faculties
  17. of Johns Hopkins, Yale and New York University, Lewis enjoyed
  18. a second career as a poetic explicator of the mysteries of life.
  19. His best-selling 1974 book, The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a
  20. Biology Watcher, won a National Book Award, and its equally
  21. popular 1979 sequel, The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of
  22. a Biology Watcher, was the winner of the award in 1981.
