- A skilled biomedical researcher who served on the faculties
- of Johns Hopkins, Yale and New York University, Lewis enjoyed
- a second career as a poetic explicator of the mysteries of life.
- His best-selling 1974 book, The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a
- Biology Watcher, won a National Book Award, and its equally
- popular 1979 sequel, The Medusa and the Snail: More Notes of
- a Biology Watcher, was the winner of the award in 1981.
